Love story Victorian Bazzar

Love story Victorian Bazzar

Her given name was Blythe Anne Goodwin, and in her mind’s eye, she was a “lady” now, in every sense of the word. For, at last, she had reached her eighteenth birthday! What jollity was clamoring within the innermost reaches of her heart! Today, of all days, there was a glow about her as warm as the mellowing embers. With auburn hair, skin that resembled that of a porcelain doll, a voluptuous form and cheeks that hinted a natural blush, she was no less than captivating. And, the moment for which she had long been awaiting will have finally arrived. Just a few more hours---eight down to the count---spent in breathless wonderment, and then, she would know!

It had been some time since her cousin, Beth Willingham, of whom she was so fond, had sent word of a gentleman friend that, indeed, had expressed a desire to meet her in person. Beth had told her only that his name is Thomas Seymour, a refined and “well to do” gentleman, and, that he was already an admirer! Yet, how could this be? For, within her own deepest thoughts she was far from the beauty one would travel many miles to gaze upon. Nevertheless, it was this “lowliness of mind and heart” that was seated at the center of her grace and loveliness. Could he, from dearest Beth’s description alone have drawn this solemn conclusion? How ever would she meet his expectations? Furthermore, would he meet hers? They were due to be arriving by the dinner hour!

There was yet preparation to be done. Her satin day gown needed to be readied, for it had been purchased and hung hopefully in her wardrobe since Beth’s mere mention of his name. There were the accessories to be chosen and her long tresses to be done in a style that was befitting a lady about to be introduced to a gentleman caller. The house needed its final touches, although mother and she had given more than the usual attention to its cleanliness. Also, she must not forget the freshly cut flowers! As she hurried down the staircase, she nearly stumbled over the vase she had placed there earlier from the cupboard. “This was no time to entertain clumsiness,” she thought. “I am about to meet the man of my dreams and ...and, I am as unsteady as a newly born colt! I must somehow find it within myself to gain my composure!”

She headed for the garden and, as the heat of the morning sun’s rays fell gently upon her arms, she felt a tingling. Could this be the sensation she would feel, as fleeting thoughts of his arms around hers passed through her mind? In daydream, Blythe gathered the floral assortment as quickly as she could, and sped back up the garden path through the door and hurriedly placed the flowers in the vase. “I shall wear one of these burgundy roses in my hair, for their scent is that of the gods!” she bellowed loudly. “What is that you say Blythe?” her mother called from the kitchen. “Oh, nothing at all, mother” she atoned. “Can you help me with my tresses after I have bathed?”

Just then, Rebecca, her sister who was five years younger than she peeked around the banister. “You had better wear the whole bouquet if you want to catch a man,” she jeered. “Oh, go catch a lowly sparrow!” Blythe quipped in dismay. “My whole life lies within the outcome of this day, and you make little of me!” she added. Rebecca sneered as she turned away and ran to the kitchen to see what mother and the maid had prepared for dinner.

Time passed by quickly and it was almost time for Beth, her brother Derrick and Thomas Seymour to arrive. Blythe gently gathered her cherished gown of green satin and carefully put it on, making certain that her petticoats were out of sight and her bodice was not too revealing. When she was satisfied with the look of her gown, she perched upon the seat of her dressing table, and reached for her hand mirror with apprehension. “Oh, I do hope he is easy to please,” she thought as she glanced at the cascading tresses and the splendid rose in her hair. “What if though, he would have me resemble Godiva!” she grimaced as she fondled one of her curls. “Well, I must be of positive thought and just keep in mind, that ‘beauty is as beauty does’!” she thought reassuringly.

It was not long thereafter that a knock came at the door and all three guests entered. “Let me take your cloaks, and your cape, my dear ones. How good it is to see you once again,” Master Goodwin said, as he kissed his niece on the cheek. “And, you my boy,” he said to Derrick, “are already a man---a dandy one at that!” “Thank you, my uncle, and you are looking very well yourself!” he replied, as they shook hands strongly. “And let us introduce to you all our good friend Thomas Seymour,” he said with pride. Thomas shook Lord Goodwin’s hand, and bowed genteelly to Lady Goodwin and Rebecca. “My pleasure to meet you sir and my fair ladies,” he said warmly, as he held a fabulous bouquet of deepest pink cabbage roses intended for Blythe. He handed Lady Goodwin one of the roses and said politely, “for you my lady.”

Lady Goodwin curtseyed with a smile. Then, Blythe’s father escorted them into the sitting room. As they all were seated he added, “and let us all have a spot of tea. Do rest your weary bones as we converse, for you must all be exhausted from your journey.” They talked for a while.

Blythe was listening at the top of the staircase and could hardly contain herself. “His voice is so...so ‘manly’; I wonder if, he’s tall or short, dark haired or fair, stout or slender,” she thought cajolingly.

After a time, Master Goodwin spoke up, “Rebecca, will you kindly let your sister know that our guests are waiting for her?” “But, of course, father,” Rebecca replied respectfully. And, as she stood up, her squozen tea bag tumbled to the floor and rested upon Thomas’ shoe. Everyone giggled as Rebecca excused herself and made a beeline for the stairs. When she reached the top, she whispered to Blythe, “Your Prince Charming has arrived and is awaiting your presence,” she snickered. “Oh, Rebecca, don’t be impudent, and you had better not spoil things,” she warned. “I have waited to time indefinite for this day to come!”

Descending the stairs, Blythe tried to steady her quivering knees. She reached the bottom and ever so ladylike, entered the room. The gentlemen rose and Beth ran over and gave her cousin a hug. “We have waited so long to see you, Blythe, and don’t you look simply stunning!” Blythe responded, “ Oh, thank you, and it is so grand to see you once again!” Over Beth’s shoulder she caught Thomas’ eye and her cheeks immediately began to turn bright pink. “He is so dashingly handsome, a man of stature and a perfect gentleman as well, ” she thought trying not to reveal her embarrassment. Derrick took Thomas’ arm and led him to the doorway. He hugged his cousin and said, “Blythe we would like for you to meet our good friend, Thomas Seymour.”

Thomas had a gleam in his eye. The sunset’s amber rays shone through the expanse of the window and fell upon Blythe’s curvaceous silhouette and what appeared to be hair of “gold,” her “crowning glory”. “It is my utmost pleasure to know you my lady!” he replied as he offered her the exquisite bouquet and softly kissed her outreached hand. “These roses cannot compare with the beauty I see before me.” Blythe was ecstatic! Never had she been spoken to in such a manner, nor had she ever experienced such exultation!

Confidently she replied, “You speak as the poets...you are too kind, my sir, and I thank you for these magnificent roses! Rebecca, darling, would you mind getting the cut glass vase from the cupboard?” she asked. “Not at all, my sister,” Rebecca retorted pretentiously.

Everyone could clearly perceive that this was a match made in heaven; and as Lady Goodwin beckoned her guests to dinner, the pair hesitated and slowly walked side by side falling well behind the others. It was as if they had known each other forever. “Do you believe in ‘love at first sight’ Blythe?” Thomas asked in a whisper, as he leaned closely to her ear. “I suppose I do,” she said coyly. “ And, may I be so bold as to say that your hair smells ‘divine’ ?” he continued. Blythe smiled, reminiscent of her own comment when she had retreated earlier from the garden.

She pondered a moment and as she removed her gloves, she exclaimed, “I think that I shall pinch myself that I may awaken 'Ma Lady Blythe Anne Goodwinand this moment will all have been a spectacular dream!” “This is no dream, my lady, yet, now I must believe that dreams actually do come true,” he replied. Blythe agreed, “and so must I,” and in wonder she added, “from where does this harmony come and in such little time?” Thomas conceded, “but I have known this day of long ago when I was first given your name,” for it means mirthful, does it not?” “Why yes,” hesitatingly Blythe offered, “and would it be too unwitting of me to divulge that in daydream I had presumed myself quite often to be Lady Seymour?” He smiled as he stared deeply into her eyes, and gently took her hand. “Come, we will warrant much distain if the dinner gets cold,” he told her softly. And then, he escorted her to the dining table. As they were seated, everyone smiled in approval... with the exception of Rebecca, who was ravenous and staring at the chandelier in boredom...

Make up

Makeup

When thinking about make-up we all tend to think about cosmetics, but a new trend sweeping slowly over the country is semi-permanent make-up. Micro pigmentation is placed just under the skin, and lasts about one and a half to three years.
Don't forget all great works of art need good a canvas, so no matter how good your cosmetics are you must begin with a good skin care regime to give the best effect.
Make up doesn't only mean decoration it also means camouflage and there are specialised cosmetics for this very purpose, all sorts of birth marks and scars can be easily covered in a wonderful range of waterproof make-up. You will also find these cosmetics to be highly refined and incredibly natural looking.

How do I make my nose look smaller?
One of the best tricks I use to make the nose appear smaller is to carefully blend a powder or concealer down the sides of the nose using a small synthetic brush (use one or to shades darker than your skin tone). Make sure to blend very well!

This will make the nose appear much slimmer at the sides. A pale powder or concealer can be blended lightly along the centre of the nose to streamline it too. For a nose that is slightly larger at the end, I recommend again, using powder or concealer (one or two shades darker) and blend onto the tip of the nose and along either sides of the tip.

The key to slimming down the nose effectively is all in the blending. Fingers and sponges work best for blending, unless you have chosen to use powder colour rather than concealer - in which case please use a small soft brush.

How do I make my eyes look bigger?
Firstly it is important to make sure that the actual eyes are properly hydrated and not red. Very popular amongst celebrities and makeup artists is a product called Collyre Blue These eye drops reduce the amount of yellow in the eye and are tinted blue, which actually makes the whites appear brighter.

Secondly, it is essential to curl the eyelashes using eyelash curlers. These will help open up the eye immediately, by lifting the eyelashes. Make sure you invest in a good quality pair of curlers and you will have them for life. Shu Uemura do the best pair, used by professionals. They also supply the refill pads too!

Next, you need to take a soft shimmery highlighter shade and apply it to the inner corners of the eyes. A pale gold, silver or flesh tone works best as long as it has a shine to it. This will instantly make the eyes appear brighter and make your eyes sparkle. Another good effect is to apply a white (or very pale pink) eyeliner to the rim of the eyes - your eyes will appear larger. Sometimes it is lovely to sweep a small amount of shimmer just on top of the middle of the eyelid, this enhances your natural eye colour.

Lastly a good few coats of mascara, combed through well with a lash comb and you are ready to go!

How do I prep my face properly before applying makeup ?
To create a perfect flawless foundation base, it is important to prep your skin correctly so that the foundation will glide on smoothly. One of the best things you can do is to exfoliate your skin regularly with a gentle exfoliater. The best one I have found that can be used daily is Dermalogica Daily Micro-exfoliant.

Next, use a gentle toner to close your pores so that the makeup will not sit in them. If you really do not like toner then a few splashes of cold water will do the trick. My favourite toner is Sisley’s Eau De Florale - it is extremely gentle on the skin and contains botanicals that feed the skin.

Apply a good moisturiser that is not too greasy, as you do not want your makeup to slide around on your skin. I recommend one from the Oil Of Olay range that is suited to your skin type. Moisturise well and really massage into the skin - as this will boost circulation and ensure a natural glow beneath your makeup.

Lastly apply a foundation primer, as these really do work to help the makeup glide on and stay on all day. Many companies stock them now, but my favourite is Laura Mercier foundation primer

How do I make my lips appear fuller?
There are several ways to make lips appear fuller. One foolproof way is to use a lip liner in the same colour as your own lips. Take a small amount of concealer and dab lightly over the lips, including the natural lip line of your lip. Draw carefully, slightly above your natural lip line all around your lips. Choose a lipstick that matches your lip liner and fill in the rest of the lips with it. Of course, applying gloss to the lips will always make them appear fuller.

Another method is to take a cream highlighter stick and with a lip brush apply in a V-shape to the cupids bow of the lips (this is the natural V-shape at the top of the lip). Next, take the lip brush and highlighter and paint onto the centre of the lips on top of you lipstick. Apply a layer of gloss over the top.

How do I keep my makeup looking fresh all day?
For a fresh look that lasts all day, I recommend using a makeup primer first - such as Nars Makeup Primer. Primers really do ensure that your foundation stays in place most of the day or night. If you feel as though your makeup has gone a bit dry during the day, then I thoroughly recommend a product by Laura Mercier called Secret Finish. It can be applied on top of makeup to refresh it and will give a radiant glow, once again, to the face. A must have product!

A serum underneath your foundation base will feed the skin with moisture throughout the day. Try SK11 De-wrinkle Essence. Bronzing powder adds a quick and easy healthy glow to the face and can be used anytime to wake the face up. Apply on top of your make up. But use sparingly!

It is also good to carry a hydrating spray mist in your bag, as a quick spritz will also revive your face instantly and create a beautiful glow. Try Estee Lauder Skin Refresher - it is a brilliant product that rehydrates the skin.

How do I apply cream blusher?
Cream blusher is the best product to achieve a natural rosy glow. It is extremely flattering for anyone. It can be blended easily with fingertips, so no need for brushes! Make sure you warm your fingers up first, as this helps to blend the cream colour easily into the cheeks.

If you apply too much, it is easy to correct by blending thoroughly and applying a very light amount of tinted moisturiser on top to take down the colour.

Cream blusher is best applied to the apples of the cheeks and blended outwards. However, cream bronzer should be applied from the hairline to underneath the cheekbone and blended down the face.

Experiment with colours and mix a few shades. Finish off with a light dusting of translucent loose powder to set the blush. I recommend all of the Stila range of cream blushers, as well as Estee Lauder who also have some great colours!

Marigold

Marigold

Botanical: Calendula officinalis (LINN.)
Family: N.O. Compositae

Synonyms---Caltha officinalis. Golds. Ruddes. Mary Gowles. Oculus Christi. Pot Marigold. Marygold. Fiore d'ogni mese. Solis Sponsa.
---Parts Used---Flowers, herb, leaves.

The Common Marigold is familiar to everyone, with its pale-green leaves and golden orange flowers. It is said to be in bloom on the calends of every month, hence its Latin name, and one of the names by which it is known in Italy - fiore d'ogni mese - countenances this derivation. It was not named after the Virgin, its name being a corruption of the Anglo-Saxon merso-meargealla, the Marsh Marigold. Old English authors called it Golds or Ruddes. It was, however, later associated with the Virgin Mary, and in the seventeenth century with Queen Mary.
---History---It was well known to the old herbalists as a garden-flower and for use in cookery and medicine. Dodoens-Lyte (A Niewe Herball, 1578) says:
'It hath pleasant, bright and shining yellow flowers, the which do close at the setting downe of the sunne, and do spread and open againe at the sunne rising.'
Linnaeus assigned a narrower limit to the expansion of its flowers, observing that they are open from nine in the morning till three in the afternoon. This regular expansion and closing of the flowers attracted early notice, and hence the plant acquired the names of solsequia and solis sponsa. There is an allusion to this peculiarity in the poems of Rowley:
'The Mary-budde that shooteth (shutteth) with the light.'
And in the Winter's Tale:
'The Marigold that goes to bed wi' th' sun,
And with him rises weeping.'
It has been cultivated in the kitchen garden for the flowers, which are dried for broth, and said to comfort the heart and spirits.
Fuller writes: 'We all know the many and sovereign virtues in your leaves, the Herbe Generalle in all pottage.' (Antheologie, 1655.) Stevens, in Maison Rustique, or the Countrie Farme (1699), mentions the Marigold as a specific for headache, jaundice, red eyes, toothache and ague. The dried flowers are still used among the peasantry 'to strengthen and comfort the hart.' He says further:
'Conserve made of the flowers and sugar, taken in the morning fasting, cureth the trembling of the harte, and is also given in the time of plague or pestilence. The yellow leaves of the flowers are dried and kept throughout Dutchland against winter to put into broths, physicall potions and for divers other purposes, in such quantity that in some Grocers or Spicesellers are to be found barrels filled with them and retailed by the penny or less, insomuch that no broths are well made without dried Marigold.'
Formerly its flowers were used to give cheese a yellow colour.
In Macer's Herbal it is stated that only to look on Marigolds will draw evil humours out of the head and strengthen the eyesight.
'Golde [Marigold] is bitter in savour
Fayr and zelw [yellow] is his flowur
Ye golde flour is good to sene
It makyth ye syth bryth and clene
Wyscely to lokyn on his flowres
Drawyth owt of ye heed wikked hirores
[humours].
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Loke wyscely on golde erly at morwe [morning]
Yat day fro feures it schall ye borwe:
Ye odour of ye golde is good to smelle.'
'It must be taken only when the moon is in the Sign of the Virgin and not when Jupiter is in the ascendant, for then the herb loses its virtue. And the gatherer, who must be out of deadly sin, must say three Pater Nosters and three Aves. It will give the wearer a vision of anyone who has robbed him.'
From Eleanour Sinclair Rohde's Old English Herbals:
'Of marygold we learn that Summe use to make theyr here yelow with the floure of this herbe, not beyng contet with the naturall colour which God hath geven the.'
Gerard speaks of:
'The fruitful or much-bearing marigold, . . . is likewise called Jackanapes-on-horsebacke: it hath leaves stalkes and roots like the common sort of marigold, differing in the shape of his floures; for this plant doth bring forth at the top of the stalke one floure like the other marigolds, from which start forth sundry other small floures, yellow likewise and of the same fashion as the first; which if I be not deceived commeth to pass per accidens, or by chance, as Nature often times liketh to play with other flowers; or as children are borne with two thumbes on one hande or such like; which living to be men do get children like unto others: even so is the seed of this Marigold, which if it be sowen it brings forth not one floure in a thousand like the plant from whence it was taken.'
Culpepper says it is a:
'herb of the Sun, and under Leo. They strengthen the heart exceedingly, and are very expulsive, and a little less effectual in the smallpox and measles than saffron. The juice of Marigold leaves mixed with vinegar, and any hot swelling bathed with it, instantly gives ease, and assuages it. The flowers, either green or dried, are much used in possets, broths, and drink, as a comforter of the heart and spirits, and to expel any malignant or pestilential quality which might annoy them. A plaister made with the dry flowers in powder, hog's-grease, turpentine, and rosin, applied to the breast, strengthens and succours the heart infinitely in fevers, whether pestilential or not.'
[Top]

---Cultivation---The Marigold is a native of south Europe, but perfectly hardy in this country, and easy to grow. Seeds sown in April, in any soil, in sunny, or half-sunny places germinate freely. They require no other cultivation but to keep them clean from weeds and to thin out where too close, leaving them 9 to 10 inches apart, so that their branches may have room to spread. The plants will begin to flower in June, and continue flowering until the frost kills them. They will increase from year to year, if allowed to seed themselves. The seeds ripen in August and September, and if permitted to scatter will furnish a supply of young plants in the spring.

Only the common deep orange-flowered variety is of medinical value.

---Parts Used---The flowers and leaves.

Leaves. - Gather only in fine weather, in the morning, after the dew has been dried by the sun. Flowers. - The ray florets are used and need quick drying in the shade, in a good current of warm air, spread out on sheets of paper, loosely, without touching each other, or they will become discoloured.

---Medicinal Action and Uses---Marigold is chiefly used as a local remedy. Its action is stimulant and diaphoretic. Given internally, it assists local action and prevents suppuration. The infusion of 1 ounce to a pint of boiling water is given internally, in doses of a tablespoonful, and externally as a local application. It is useful in chronic ulcer, varicose veins, etc. Was considered formerly to have much value as an aperient and detergent in visceral obstructions and jaundice.

It has been asserted that a Marigold flower, rubbed on the affected part, is an admirable remedy for the pain and swelling caused by the sting of a wasp or bee. A lotion made from the flowers is most useful for sprains and wounds, and a water distilled from them is good for inflamed and sore eyes.

An infusion of the freshly-gathered flowers is employed in fevers, as it gently promotes perspiration and throws out any eruption - a decoction of the flowers is much in use in country districts to bring out smallpox and measles, in the same manner as Saffron. Marigold flowers are in demand for children's ailments.

The leaves when chewed at first communicate a viscid sweetness, followed by a strong penetrating taste, of a saline nature. The expressed juice, which contains the greater part of this pungent matter, has been given in cases of costiveness and proved very efficacious. Snuffed up the nose it excites sneezing and a discharge of mucous from the head.

The leaves, eaten as a salad, have been considered useful in the scrofula of children, and the acrid qualities of the plant have caused it to be recommended as an extirpator of warts.

A yellow dye has also been extracted from the flower, by boiling.

---Preparations and Dosage---Fluid extract, 1/4 to 1 drachm.
